Chickenpox has long been thought of as a harmless childhood illness, a rite of passage marked by itchy red spots and a few days off school. What is Chickenpox?<\/b><\/h2>

Chickenpox is caused by the <\/span>varicella-zoster virus<\/b><\/a> (VZV). It spreads easily from person to person through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through direct contact with the fluid in chickenpox blisters. Although it is most common in children, anyone without prior immunity can contract it, including adults, who often experience more severe symptoms.<\/span><\/p>

In most children, chickenpox is mild and resolves on its own. However, complications though rare can include infections of the skin, brain inflammation, lung infections (pneumonitis), and, in extremely rare cases, stroke or death. Symptoms and Diagnosis<\/span><\/h2>

Chickenpox typically begins with early symptoms such as fever, fatigue, headache, and loss of appetite. These may last one to two days before the classic red, itchy rash appears.
